Fifth International Choral Biennale

The Netherlands Radio Choir will give a concert during the 5th International Choral Biennale. the program includes the world permiere of a piece by Swedish Sven-David Sandström.

The anniversary edition of the International Choral Biennale takes place from 26 June until 4 July in Haarlem. This time the Choral Biennale 5 again presents large and small ensembles and special music. The theme of this anniversary edition is 'The Northerlings'. The programming pays ample attention North-European choral music and culture.

Commission
In this context the Netherlands Radio Choir will sing in the St Bavo cathedral. On the program the world premiere of Drei Gedichte von Egon Schiele by Sven-David Sandström (born 1942). This work has been commissioned by Radio 4 for the Netherlands Radio Choir and the International Choral Biennale. Sandström is ‘composer in residence’of this Biennale and will be present at the concert. The Choir will also sing "Vespers" from "Vigilia" by Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara.

Radio recordings
Other choirs which will be performing during this Biennale are among others the Latvian Chamber Choir, St. Jakobs Kammarkör and Trio Mediaeval from Norway. Several concerts will be recorded. KRO will broadcast het performance by the Netherlands Radio Choir directly. RNE Madrid will do this on 2 July. Estonian Radio, BBC London and Latvian Radio will also be recording the concert.

Eric Ericson Masterclass
On 22 February last nine participants in the fifth Eric Ericson Masterclass for young choral conductors will be selected. The selection has been made by conductors Stephen Cleobury and Jos van Veldhoven. They will lead the Masterclass from 26 June until 3 July 2009. Members of the Netherlands Radio Choir and the Netherlands Chamber Choir and their manager Monica Damen and director Leo Samama respectively were also on the selection committee. Participants will conduct both choirs during the Masterclass.

Initiative
The Netherlands Radio Choir considers it one of its responsibilities to play a part in the training of a new generation of choral conductors. In a joint initiative of the Choir in 2001 the “Eric Ericson Masterclass” for young choral conductors has been founded. Participants in the Masterclass regularly take up the position of assistant conductor with the Choir.

Final presentation
This fifth Eric Ericson Masterclass will be held from 26 June until 3 July 2009 in the Philharmonie in Haarlem. The Masterclass has been inserted in the program of the International Choral Biennale 5. The sessions on 1, 2 and 3 July will be open to a paying audience. On 3 July after the last session a final presentation will take place at 5 p.m. Participants will conduct a selection from the repertoire rehearsed previously.
