French premiere
'Les sept paroles' is the revised version of 'Les sept paroles du Christ en croix', written in 1986-88. Tristan Murail was commissioned this new version by the ZaterdagMatinee concert series, Ircam-Centre Pompidou and Radio France. The Netherlands Radio Choir had rehearsed 'Les sept paroles'with its chief condcutor Celso Antunes for the world premiere in Amsterdam. The Choir had been asked to travel to Paris for the de French premiere led by Pascal Rophé by the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. This concert is part of a tryptich (on 11, 12 and 13 June) at the Ircam, which paints a musical portrait Murail who is hardly known in The Netherlands.Spectralist
Tristan Murail is known as one of the great French ‘spectralists’. They base their music on fundamental of relations between (over)tones. In 'Les sept paroles' Murail combines this with his long-standing wish to write a score for large choir, orchestra and virtual choir. The usage of computer technique is characteristic of Murail's work. It is an essential link in the process to make audible the hidden ‘spectrum’ of a tone.'Intoxicating'
After the performance in Amsterdam critic Anthony Fiumara wrote (Trouw, 13 April ’10): ‘The immense work sounded like a tidal play of sounds, rich in shades of colour and with electronics as a sonorous extension. The Radio Philharmonic played the often intoxicating Murail sublimely; the Radio Choir subtly switched between speaking, murmering and singing … The way in which the choir entered while whispering and also ended with a rustling sound on the elongated ‘s’ of the Latin ‘exaudies’ was beautiful.’Speakings
The concert will be opened with 'Speakings' by Jonathan Harvey. In this work computer techniques are employed to convert spoken language into instrumental forms. This fulfilled an also long-standing wish of Harvey , i.e. to make an orchestra ‘talk’.The concert of 12 June will be recorded by Radio France and broadcast on 24 June at 8.00 pm on France Musique.
